Game 1: Meteor Shower
Each sequencing engine in the Pittsburgh Modular Game System is called a Game, and right from the start you know you're in exotic territory with the first Game, Meteor Shower. The 8 x 8 grid of LEDs turns into an old-school arcade game, in which you can navigate a "spaceship" through an asteroid field. The Game System module outputs gates and random control voltages in response to the action on the LED grid. If you explore controlled randomness in your electronic music, you'll appreciate the quirkiness of the Game System's Meteor Shower mode. In this sequencing mode, Output 1 sends a CV signal, Output 2 and Output 3 send gate signals, and Output 4 sends a clock signal.
Game 2: Music Programmer CV/Gate Sequencer
After the Meteor Shower, the second Game in the Pittsburgh Modular Game System is a refreshing return to classic 32-step sequencing. Input active steps with the joystick button, or use an external CV controller to generate control voltages. You can adjust the sequence length from 1 to 32 steps and play it forward, in reverse, alternating forward and backward (pendulum), or in random order. The CV output is quantized to 1V/octave for precise tuning across the entire musical range. Game 2 is perfect for bass lines, synth leads, arpeggios, and other musical applications. In this sequencing mode, Output 1 and Output 2 send a CV signal, Output 3 sends a gate signal, and Output 4 is a clock signal.
Game 3: Percussion Programmer 4-channel Gate Sequencer
Game 3 in the Game System module, the Percussion Programmer gate sequencer, makes short work of programming driving analog drum grooves. Each of the outputs can be independently set to a fixed time division, or allowed to roam freely within the time grid for random results. Game 5: Probability Machine 2-channel Chaotic Gate Generator
Here's a rewardingly random way to trigger your synth modules: the Game System's Probability Machine sequencing mode gives you two CV outputs and two gate outputs that send random voltages based on a cascading-chance algorithm. While the gates are activated randomly, they're always triggered on a multiple of the clock value, so the generated patterns are always musically and rhythmically useful. In this mode, the CV voltages change each time the gates are triggered.
Game 6: Euclidean Rhythms Algorithmic Gate Sequencer
Tell the Euclidean Rhythms sequencing engine how many steps long the sequence will be, and how many beats are within the sequence, and the Game System module will generate a sequence that mathematically distributes the number of active beats evenly across the length of the sequence. It's based on a paper by Godfried Toussaint, which explores commonalities between ancient Euclidean algorithms and modern music theory. In other words, you can create evocative synth lines and percussion grooves that feel musical but don't seem to conform to traditional rhythmic structures. In this sequencing mode, Output 1 sends a CV signal. Output 2 sends a gate signal on active steps, Output 3 sends a gate signal on inactive steps, and Output 4 sends a clock signal on every step.
Control with the joystick button or the CV/Gate input
The Game System module sports a clickable joystick for entering steps, changing the pitch value of steps, and so on. There are also external CV/Gate inputs to control the joystick button, change modes, reset the sequencer, and sync to an external clock signal.
Four CV/Gates with multiple configurations
The first two outputs on the Game System module will be either CV or gate outputs, depending on the sequencing mode you have selected. Outputs 3 and 4 will always be gate outputs, with their specific functionality again determined by the currently selected Game.
